Nobody tells you this when you get your keys
You're about to make a $50,000 decision on excitement and zero sleep. The industry wants 30 days of your urgency. Don't give it to them.
Nobody tells you this when you get your keys.
Everyone just says congrats and asks when the housewarming is.
But here's what's actually happening: you're about to make a $50,000 decision while running on excitement and zero sleep. And the industry is designed to move you fast. Showrooms. Packages. “Limited slots.” All of it is built to compress your timeline.
So the first thing I'd tell anyone who just got their keys is this.
Don't call anyone yet.
Go to your unit three times. Morning, afternoon, evening. Bring nothing. Just walk around. Sit on the floor if you have to. You're not planning yet, you're just learning how the light moves. Where it's bright. Where it gets dark. That's information no contractor will give you.
Then download your floor plan from the HDB portal. This is the document that governs everything. Every decision traces back to it.
After that, write down your non-negotiables. Not a Pinterest board. Not a vibe. Actual things, if this isn't in my home, my daily life is harder. That list.
Then, and only then, set a budget. A real one. Not the number that feels comfortable to say out loud.
Now you can start talking to people.
The renovation industry wants 30 days of your urgency. Don't give it to them.
Slow down. The house will still be there.
